What are
wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the back molars in your mouth, usually emerging in the late teens or early twenties. Most people don’t have enough room in their jaw for them to erupt properly, so they frequently become ‘impacted’ (wedged in), which can cause pain, infection, and pressure on neighbouring teeth.
Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth out, and we’ll always give you an honest assessment of whether removal is the right option for you.

Why trust Cranbourne Family Dental with your wisdom teeth removal?
Our oral surgeon, Dr Naser Albarbari (MSc, MOMS Glasgow, FDS England, FDS Edinburgh), is a registered specialist in Australia with extensive experience removing wisdom teeth, including complex impacted cases. He works alongside our general dental team, including Dr Sanjana Illango (BDS) and Dr Steffi Ngau (MDent), so you’re in good hands from consultation through to recovery.
Cranbourne Family Dental is part of the My Dentist Network, one of Melbourne’s largest and most experienced dental groups.
Why might I need my wisdom teeth removed?
Wisdom teeth don’t always need to come out. Usually, the decision to recommend the extraction of wisdom teeth is made when there are symptoms (inflamed gums, swelling, pain), pathology (e.g., a cyst) or if a wisdom tooth is partially erupted (when part of the crown of the tooth has come through the gum, but not all of it). This is because partially erupted wisdom teeth are non-functional but very difficult to keep clean, which often leads to gum inflammation or decay.
Your dentist will assess your teeth with an examination and X-ray and talk you through the options, but the final decision is always yours.
Like all forms of surgery, wisdom teeth removal contains risks that will be discussed by your dentist. An x-ray (OPG) will be required to determine the degree of these risks. However it should be remembered that removal of wisdom teeth are very common procedures.

FAQs
Will I need my wisdom teeth out?
Not necessarily. We usually recommend removal when there are symptoms such as pain, swelling or an inflamed gum, signs of pathology, or if a wisdom tooth is partially erupted and difficult to keep clean. Your dentist will assess your situation with an examination and X-ray and talk you through the options.
What age is best for wisdom teeth removal?
In most cases, the earlier the better. Removal in the late teens or early twenties is generally preferred because:
- The roots are not yet fully formed
- The surrounding bone is less dense
- Recovery tends to be quicker
As patients get older, the procedure can become more complex.
How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Cranbourne?

We offer IV sedation for patients who would prefer to be relaxed during the procedure, available in-clinic, so there’s no need to travel to a hospital or day surgery.

If a wisdom tooth is causing sudden pain or signs of infection, please get in touch with us as soon as you can. Our team will assess your situation and advise on the most appropriate next steps.
